Risto Päivinen received his Ph.D. in Forestry from the University of Joensuu, Finland in 1987. He started his career at the University of Helsinki’s Department of Forest Mensuration and Management. Later on he worked as a Research Officer at the Finnish Forest Research Institute and then served as an Associate Professor and Professor in the Faculty of Forestry, University of Joensuu.

In 1993, Dr. Päivinen started as Deputy Director at the newly established European Forest Institute (EFI). He served as Director of EFI for 14 years and retired from that position in 2015. Since 2015, he has worked as Senior Advisor at Tapio Ltd., Finland.

Risto Päivinen’s scientific interests have expanded from forest resource inventories, remote sensing technologies and forest management planning to global forest monitoring, sustainability assessments, information technology, and most recently to issues dealing with the science-policy-practice interaction.
