President and Chief Executive Officer, International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), Canada
Scott Vaughan is IISD President. He has been Canada’s federal Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development, Director of the Department of Sustainable Development of the Organization of American States (OAS), a Visiting Scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Head of Economics at the NAFTA Environment Commission and Counsellor at the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Vaughan held various positions with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), including initiating the UNEP Finance Initiative. In the late 1980s, he worked at the head office of the Royal Bank (now RBC) Financial Group. He holds post-graduate degrees from the London School of Economics, the University of Edinburgh and Dalhousie University, and an undergraduate degree from Mount Allison University.
Current affiliations include: co-chair of the CCICED special study on environmental accounting and auditing; co-convenor of the ICTSD E15 Task Force on trade and natural resources; co-chair of the Council of Canadian Academies panel report on the environmental footprint of oil sands; member of the Future Earth Engagement Committee; and member of the UNEP International Advisory Council for the Advancement of Justice, Governance and Law for Environmental Sustainability.
