Mr. Clark is Professor of Chemistry at University of York and Director of the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence where he leads a research team of about 100 people specializing in the valorization of waste and the development of green chemical technologies. He is also a director of the Biorenewables Development Centre, a scale-up facility for proving new technologies and new bio-based products as well as being the CEO of the spin-out company Starbon Technologies ltd.

James has been at the forefront of green chemistry worldwide for 20 years: he was founding scientific editor of the journal Green Chemistry, and is senior editor for the RSC Green Chemistry book series, and President of the Green Chemistry Network. He represents NGOs on UK Government and EU committees, and sits on the scientific committee for the Eni award and the Singapore Ministry of Education’s Expert Panel. He has numerous recent awards including the RSC Environment Prize, the SCI Chemistry for Industry award, and awards for his work with industry and education. He holds an honorary doctorate from Ghent University. He has published over 400 articles, filed over 25 patents and written or edited over 20 books.
