Prof. Petteri Taalas acts as Director General of the Finnish Meteorological Institute. The Director General’s office is responsible for international affairs at Institute level, for relations with stakeholders and for the Institute’s internal and external communications.

Prof. Petteri Taalas (PhD in meteorology in 1993, Helsinki University) acted as Director at the World Meteorological Organization (UN, Geneva) in 2005-2007, before returning to his current position as Director General of the Finnish Meteorological Institute. Mr Taalas is specialized in Arctic and Antarctic research, global change, ozone, UV radiation, atmospheric chemistry-climate interactions, and satellite programs for monitoring atmospheric chemistry and meteorology. He is leader of several international and national research and development programs in the above listed fields. Prof. Taalas is the National Chairman of Finland of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Chairman of the Council of the European Meteorological Satellite Organization EUMETSAT and Chairman of the Council of the University of Eastern Finland.
