KOLI - AN IDEAL SETTING FOR AN INTERNATIONAL SUMMIT
Koli has been voted the most beautiful spot in Finland, featuring panoramic vistas over forests and lakes. The place provides a peaceful and inspiring setting for discussions on natural resources.
This is not the first time Koli has hosted a top-level conference. The Heritage Centre has been the venue for numerous international events, from scientific seminars to workshops at ministerial level. However, this is the first Koli Forum for invited European leaders, and is intended to be the forerunner of a series of biennial summits.
The Koli region is one of the oldest destinations for nature tourism and those seeking out solitude in Finland, and today the Koli National Park is one of Finland's most visited national parks. It is a first-rate area for outdoor pursuits; ideal for hiking, canoeing, fishing and skiing. In winter, Koli hill is also a popular destination for local downhill skiers.
The Sokos Hotel Koli and the seminar venue – Heritage Centre Ukko - are conveniently located adjacent to each other on Koli hill. Hiking routes of varying lengths start just around the corner. In their free time, there is the possibility for participants in the Koli Forum to hike a few hundred meters to a viewing point opening up a vista towards to Lake Pielinen and over vast forests all the way to the Russian border. Hiking routes require comfortable shoes and, as the weather is already cold at the end of October (the temperature may be between -5 and +5° C), also warm clothing and gloves.
