Assistant Director of the European Forest Institute

Gert-Jan Nabuurs was appointed Assistant Director of the European Forest Institute in June 2009. Before this, Dr Nabuurs worked as a teamleader at Alterra, which is a research institute for the green living environment and part of the Wageningen University and Research Centre in the Netherlands. His main field of interest is in forest resource modelling for European forests. These strategic analyses have been applied to wood supply issues, aspects of biodiversity and carbon sequestration questions, and have been used by many policy makers to support their theses. 

He was the Co-ordinating Lead Author for the IPCC Good Practice Guidance report (2003) and is coordinating lead author of the ‘forestry’ chapter of Working Group III’s contribution to the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report.

Gert-Jan Nabuurs holds a Master’s degree in forestry and soil sciences from the Agricultural University, Wageningen and a PhD in forest planning and economics from the University of Joensuu, Finland.
